More than film
Every edition, we organize extra activities before or after the film. This way, you can connect to the international community and experience an evening filled with more than just film. Because it is the international film festival and we're attending a Portuguese film, we've planned a special Portuguese night for you! We'll start the evening with a fado performance (Portuguese music) accompanied by a meet-up.Â
About the film
This edition, we'll attend the Portuguese film Vadio (Drifter). The director will be present to answer all your questions after the screening! The film is a gritty social realism to tell the story of Andre, barely a teenager, who scrapes by with his father by digging wells in the dusty and remote Alentejo region of Portugal. One day, after gifting Andre a new tablet, Dad leaves Andre in the hands of social services and disappears. Escaping the authorities, Andre turns to the only neighbour for miles around, Sandra (Joana Santos)—a single mom who has slipped badly in the mothering department—for help. Together, this odd couple will improvise a kind of brother-sister bond as they search for Andre’s father and their own personal redemption… Rarely has a film dealt with the harsh realities of poverty and guilt in quite the same way, while the performances of the two leads absolutely sparkle.
About the musicians
Tantrum Saxophone Quartet is a dynamic contemporary classical music ensemble that was formed in 2020 in The Netherlands by Belgian and Portuguese saxophonists. The members include Artur Lopes, Dauphine Van der Velpen, João Faustino and Ruben Almeida. In 2021, the quartet received first prize at the Willem-Twee Chamber Music Contest and in 2023 the Grand Prize for chamber music in the New York Music Competition. The quartet engages actively in their contact with composers, for example Patrick Ellis, whom’s work they premiered back in 2022.
Tantrum Saxophone Quartet is an ambitious ensemble that blends traditional saxophone techniques with contemporary and folk music. The group's upcoming program highlights the Portuguese music genre of Fado, featuring music that emotionally expresses the country's soul and the stories of its people. This program will showcase the quartet's vivid sound, stunning improvisations, and engaging performances. Fado repertoire will include favorite songs from legendary musicians such as Carlos Paredes, as well as lesser known compositions featuring the quartet's unique sound. Don't miss the chance to experience this mesmerizing performance!
