About the film
Experience life in a violent Rio de Janeiro favela through the eyes of a young photographer in this modern Brazilian classic that bursts with passion, color, and visual magic. Newly digitally remastered, City of God (Cidade de Deus) returns to the big screen at Cinecitta for a one-time special showing.
Returning to cinemas 20 years after its Dutch premiere in a new digital remaster, City of God follows Buscapé, a poor, sensitive young black man growing up in one of Rio de Janeiro's most violent favelas. Fearing the inevitable pull of a life of crime, Buscapé is saved by his talent as a photographer, allowing him to pursue a career. Through his camera lens, he captures the day-to-day life of his community, where violence seems endless.
Directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, this essential arthouse staple of the 2000s crackles with passion, violence, color, and visual wizardry. The film, shot using a combination of 16mm, 35mm, and digital formats, was Brazil’s submission to the Oscars and primarily features amateur actors who bring the relentless violence and restless energy of the favela to life.
Films accessible to all
This event is organized by International Center Tilburg in collaboration with Cinecitta. Both want to provide cinema to internationals living in Tilburg. Therefore, the entire program will be in English and films will have English subtitles (or will be English spoken). Cinecitta is a local arthouse cinema that also organizes an International Film Festival every year.
